A Day in the Life takes you into the everyday of local creatives and business owners as they show you the best of their city.

November Paynter is the Artistic Director at MOCA Toronto, a contemporary art museum and gallery, who lives in the Roncesvalles neighbourhood. We caught up with November on what she misses pre-COVID, “Istanbul and friends,” and her ideal day in Toronto.

November’s Journey to MOCA.

“I moved to Toronto in 2017 to help expand the vision and devise new programming for MOCA. That said, the museum and move to Sterling Rd. were already in motion when I arrived.”

What’s going on at MOCA?

The first edition of our triennial survey “Greater Toronto Art 2021” is now on view. The exhibition brings together 21 energizing artists and art collectives who work in the Greater Toronto Area or have direct connections with the city. Spanning all three floors of the Museum, the exhibition is defined by MOCA’s pledge to support the work of Toronto artists and the commissioning of new projects that add to local and global discourse. The exhibition title plays on Greater Toronto Area, the name of the city's broad metropolitan area, addressing the ever-expanding notion of what Toronto might be and where it extends by exploring the practices and perspectives of a diversity of artists. GTA21 is on view through January 9, 2022.

“Great coffee and delectable biscuits, as well as baked goods and curated wines. The venue at MOCA is open a little before the Museum every morning so you can grab a coffee before taking in the art, or experience the art first and then indulge in a glass of wine!”

1:00 PM

Midday, she heads to Patel Brown Gallery for some creative inspiration.

Why does November love it?

“Devan and Gareth not only opened their new commercial gallery venture during the summer of 2020, but have so far presented a run of impressive exhibitions including numerous artists with exceptional artworks. It's also in the neighbourhood and has been an important escape to see new and exciting art during this period.”

6:00 PM

In the evenings, November heads to Tommy’s Wine Bar to pickup a bottle to enjoy with dinner.

“Great style, excellent coffee, specialized wines and beers to go, and more - we love this new addition to our neighbourhood right on the corner of Columbus Parkette - and it's allowed for lots of distanced, park meets with a drink in hand.”
