A Day in the Life takes you into the everyday of local creatives and business owners as they show you the best of their city.

Tamy Rofe, restaurateur and co-owner of neighbourhood favourite Colonia Verde and CASA by Colonia Verde, lives in Bedstuy, Brooklyn. We caught up with Tamy on what she’s missing pre-COVID and her favourite spots in Brooklyn.

CASA by Colonia Verde Backstory.

“CASA by Colonia Verde is a brand that was born from ultimate chaos and survival instinct. Felipe and I (Felipes is the executive chef of Colonia Verde and also my business partner and partner in love and life) took about a week and a half in March, after COVID had hit New York, to mourn, to be scared out of our minds, hug our children a lot (drink a lot of wine) and then we said: Ok time to get to work! We knew that if we didn’t act quickly the restaurant wouldn’t survive and that our staff was counting on us for their paycheck, many of them Latin American immigrants who did not receive a dime from government unemployment. We turned to our own home to get inspired. We figured, the home is going to be the utmost important space for people, so let’s get in there. And with that came CASA, a craft delivery service that sells from easy to assemble ceviches, to a list of natural wines and mezcales, to table sets for your kitchen. Boom, a way to keep everyone safe and to really add to our neighbours’ homes.”

What’s next.

We are kicking off a couple of Zoom collaborations where Felipe can cook with other chefs and I can open up a couple of bottles of wine and talk about them. We also have our eye on our canned sauces. We have gotten great reception and are wondering what it would be like to have a lineup of sauces we could ship nationally…who knows, perhaps a dream, perhaps a reality!

What Tamy is missing from pre-COVID.

“Wine class! Every Thursday the team and I would gather around the bar and open up two wines from the list. Sitting at a bar in a crowded restaurant on date night with my husband”. Sitting at a bench inside the Whitney Museum and seeing the art and people around the room.

10:00 AM

Tamy stops by Black Gold Records for her morning coffee in Carrol Gardens.

“Great coffee in the mornings. They play great records in the AM that you can find in the store and are not so expensive. I end up getting coffee + whatever they are playing.”

12:00 PM

Midday she heads to Carrie Lyndsey Beauty in Forte Green for some pampering.

Carrie Lyndsey Beauty

“Carrie is a pillar of the neighborhood. She usually has a small collection of vintage clothes hand picked by her which is killer, and her facials will change the world. More than anything, Carrie will make your face hurt from smiling, I love her, the hood loves her!”

3:00 PM

In the afternoon, you’ll find her back in her neighbourhood, Bedstuy, at Mixtape for some creative inspiration.

The Mixtape Club

“Also a record store / coffeeshop. I come here when I have creative work to get done. A ton of Brazilian and lo-fi electronic beats, and the atmosphere is really inspiring.”
